Sports Coordinator - UM SPORTS in Maastricht

Welcome to Maastricht University UM SPORTS is the sporting heart of Maastricht University and the place for sports, health, and social connection. By working at UM SPORTS, you directly contribute to the wellbeing of 7,500 members, ranging from students to local residents.

We are looking for two enthusiastic and experienced Sports Coordinators with leadership experience, strong interpersonal skills, and an affinity with student sports associations. Are you well-organized, do you enjoy working in a dynamic environment, and do you have a passion for sports and physical activity? Then we invite you to apply.

Sports Coordinator UM SPORTS (0.9–1.0 FTE)

  • Our goal: To deliver a diverse sports program for various target groups and ensure student sports associations that function optimally.
  • Your colleagues: A team of sports professionals, office staff, and internal and external partners (including MUMC+, Maastricht Sport, and other sports providers) who together make sports and physical activity possible.

The University Sports Centre in Randwyck is a vibrant place where sports, study, and social interaction come together. Students, staff, and external users make daily use of our facilities. To further strengthen this dynamic environment, we are looking for a coordinator who brings structure, supports student sports associations, and further develops the sports offering.

In this role, you combine coordination, leadership, and sports expertise (experience with group classes, aerobics, and yoga is a plus). You provide direction to the sports program, manage sports instructors, and translate developments in the sports sector into an attractive and varied offering. You act as a sparring partner for the Head of Department and work closely with colleagues, associations, and external partners.

You will lead approximately 25 sports instructors, often with small contracts. You ensure structure, clear communication, and a working environment in which people can develop. At the same time, you safeguard the quality of the sports offering and make adjustments where necessary.

This position allows for a hands-on role: combining coordination with (limited) teaching is possible. This keeps you closely connected to the practice and content of sports and physical activity.

We are recruiting two coordinators, totaling 1.8–2.0 FTE. One of these positions is temporary (1 year), while the other is part of the regular staff formation. Depending on your profile, experience, and preferences, we will determine a suitable role together. The exact possibilities and division will be discussed during the interview.

What will you do?

Your role is varied and includes:

Leadership and team development

  • Recruit staff and establish agreements with external sports providers.
  • Conduct development, absence, and performance interviews.
  • Coach sports instructors and student sports association boards and act as a point of contact for content-related and operational questions.

Coordination and execution

  • Plan and allocate work and prepare schedules.
  • Monitor annual working hours and align capacity.
  • Organize team meetings and stimulate collaboration.
  • Act as a point of contact for multiple student sports associations.

Quality and development

  • Monitor and improve the quality of the sports program.
  • Initiate training, workshops, and class visits.
  • Identify trends and translate them into new offerings.

Strategy and operations

  • Contribute to the departmental plan and sports program.
  • Monitor staffing and budgets within your teams.
  • Advise on sports policy and program development.
  • Contribute to events and projects.

Working hours:You will mainly work Monday to Friday and occasionally on weekends. Due to our extended opening hours, this will not always be between 09:00 and 17:00.

Are you ready to take on this versatile role? We would love to meet you.

What you bring

We are not looking for checkboxes, but for who you are and what you bring:

  • Connecting leadership – You lead with trust and clarity and create strong team dynamics.
  • Organizational talent – You maintain oversight, plan effectively, and bring structure to a dynamic environment.
  • Decisiveness – You make decisions and stand firm when needed.
  • Affinity with sports – You have a strong connection with (student) sports, health, and physical activity.
  • Collaborative strength – You work smoothly with colleagues, associations, and external partners.
  • Flexibility and resilience – You take initiative, recognize opportunities, switch quickly, and maintain calm and overview.
  • Solid foundation – A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in sports studies/sports management (or similar) and at least 3 years of relevant work experience, including 1 year in a coordinating or leadership role.
  • Strong communication skills – You communicate clearly in Dutch and English (both at least C1 level or willing to reach this level).

What we offer At Maastricht University, you will work in an international, open, and engaged environment. We offer:

  • A one-year contract of 0.9–1.0 FTE (34.2–40 hours), after a year we look into the possibility of extending the contract.
  • A salary in scale 9: €3,708 – €5,057 (based on full-time employment of 38 hours per week), excluding 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • 29 vacation days (full-time), 4 additional days off, and the possibility to accrue 12 extra days.
