Library Services Staff Member-Student Assistants Mentor in Maastricht

Are you looking for a versatile position in the dynamic world of libraries? Do you have a passion for traditional library work and enjoy advising on new technologies and developments? Are you digitally skilled, service-oriented, and the dedicated mentor our student assistants need?

Then we would love to meet you!

Welcome to Maastricht University Library!

Our focus is on providing optimal access to scientific information and supporting education and research. Our services are available to students, researchers, and staff of Maastricht University (UM), as well as our partners.

Library Services Staff Member

Our goal: As a Library Services Staff Member, you will play a representative role in an environment where information services, digital support, safety, and hospitality are key. You will learn the library and loan administration system and manage the related administrative processes. You will work both in public spaces and behind the scenes. Together with the Team Leader, a second mentor, and colleagues from the Facilities team, you will guide and support student assistants in their work.

Your Team; You will join Team Information: a dedicated and helpful team committed to providing first-line information to visitors. Together, you support the use of our (digital) Learning Spaces and ensure a pleasant and accessible study environment.

What you do

During your service at one of our two main locations, you will be the first point of contact for visitors. You assist them, answer questions about scientific information and other library services—at the desk, by phone, and via email. Next to this:

  • You guide and advise visitors on how to independently use scientific information sources and search engines.
  • While on front office duty, you will move flexibly between public areas and the back office. Together with colleagues, you ensure attractive presentation of collections and study areas, and you monitor compliance with house rules. Good knowledge of our collections, services, and facilities is essential.
  • You actively contribute to technical and facility support in our digital information skills labs.
  • You are a visible and engaged representative of our hospitality and safety vision within the library. You help us continuously improve our services—both physically and online—and optimize the user experience.

Specific Tasks

In addition to general tasks, each team member takes the lead on one or more specific responsibilities. The colleague we are looking for will act as a mentor for approximately 30 student assistants in Team Information .

These student assistants mainly work evenings and weekends at our two main locations (Binnenstad and Randwyck), serving as emergency response officers, supervisors, and providing assistance with information and facilities. During weekdays, some student assistants also work in Learning Spaces located in faculty buildings. Your role is to guide and support these student assistants in their duties. This also means you will regularly work evening and weekend shifts as a hands-on supervisor.

The Team Leader is responsible for the overall management of student assistants. Alongside you, there is another mentor who also handles scheduling and time administration.

Are you ready to set the course for the years ahead? Then we’d love to meet you.

What you bring

We are looking for someone who feels at home in an academic library with a young, international audience. You thrive in an environment where planning, organization, and information services intersect, and you are eager to contribute your talents.

You are curious, proactive, and have an entrepreneurial mindset. You actively contribute to improving our services so they keep pace with technological developments and changing user needs. You also bring:

  • MBO or HBO (associate/bachelor) level education, preferably in a relevant field such as services, information management, or hospitality.
  • A professional appearance and work attitude. Experience mentoring or supervising (student) staff is an advantage.
  • Strong digital skills; you are comfortable using systems and online tools.
  • Excellent communication skills in Dutch and English (minimum C1 level). If you do not yet fully meet this level, Maastricht University will offer and cover the cost of a suitable training course.

Additionally:

  • You are flexible within library opening hours (08:30–22:00). Evening and weekend shifts are required during busy periods, exams, and based on the schedule, which is set several weeks in advance.
  • You have (or are willing to obtain) an Emergency Response Certificate (training will be provided).

What We Offer

As a Library Services Staff Member at Maastricht University Library, you join the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. We offer:

  • Good employment conditions. The position is classified in scale 6–7, according to the UFO profile “Library Services Staff Member,” with a salary between €2,872 and €3,809 gross per month (full-time, 38 hours/week), plus 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • A 12-month contract for 0.8 FTE, with the prospect of a permanent contract upon satisfactory performance.
  • Flexible working hours and partial remote work options (where function allows), including monthly home office and internet allowances.
  • 29 vacation days and 4 additional holidays for full-time employees (Carnival Monday & Tuesday, Good Friday, Liberation Day), plus up to 12 extra days through compensatory time.
  • Customizable employment benefits through our collective labor agreement (CAO).
  • Excellent secondary benefits such as ABP pension, corporate fitness, and access to UM’s extensive sports facilities.
  • Opportunities for personal and professional development through training and programs such as “Recognition and Rewards.”
