Library Services Staff - Info Activities & Events in Maastricht

Are you looking for a versatile position in the dynamic world of libraries?

Do you have a passion for traditional library work and enjoy advising on new technologies and developments? Are you digitally skilled, customer-oriented, and energized by organizing activities and events related to information services? And do you also have strong coordination skills and plenty of initiative?

Then we would love to meet you!

Welcome to Maastricht University Library!

Our mission is to provide optimal access to scientific information and to support education and research. Our services are available to students, researchers, and staff of Maastricht University (UM), as well as our partners.

Libray Services Staff Member

Our goal: As a Library Services Staff Member, you will play a representative role in an environment where content-driven services, digital support, safety, and hospitality are essential. You will become proficient in the library and lending administration system and manage the related administrative processes. You will work both in public spaces and behind the scenes, taking the lead in organizing a wide range of activities and events.

Your Team

You will join Team Information: an engaged and supportive team committed to providing first-line information services to visitors. Together, you will assist in the use of our (digital) Learning Spaces and ensure a pleasant and accessible learning environment.

During your service shifts at one of our two main locations, you will be the first point of contact for visitors. You assist them, answer questions about scientific information and other library services—at the desk, by phone, and via email. Next to this:

  • You guide and advise visitors on how to independently use scientific information sources and search engines.
  • During front-office duties, you will move flexibly between public areas and the back office. Together with colleagues, you ensure an attractive presentation of collections and study areas and monitor compliance with house rules. A good overview of our collection, services, and facilities is essential.
  • You actively contribute to facility and technical support within our digital information skills labs.
  • You are a visible and engaged representative of our hospitality and safety vision within the Library. You also help us continuously improve our services—both physically and online—and optimize the user experience.

Specific Tasks

In addition to general tasks, each colleague in our team takes the lead on one or more specific responsibilities. In this role, you will be responsible for coordinating a variety of activities and events, such as themed sessions around our collection, open days, the INKOM introduction week, guided tours, and public campaigns. You will work closely with colleagues, but you will maintain oversight, steer the process, and ensure proper planning and execution.

Are you ready to set the course for the years ahead? Then we’d love to meet you.

What you bring

We are looking for someone who feels at home in an academic library with a young, international audience. You thrive in an environment where planning, organization, and information services intersect, and you enjoy applying your talents in this context.

You are curious, proactive, and entrepreneurial. You actively contribute to the continuous improvement of our services, ensuring they align with technological developments and changing user needs.

You also bring:

  • MBO or HBO (associate/bachelor) level education in a relevant field, such as services, information management, or hospitality.
  • A professional appearance and attitude. Experience organizing activities and events is an advantage.
  • Strong digital skills; you are comfortable working with systems and online tools.
  • Excellent communication skills in Dutch and English (minimum C1 level). If you do not fully meet this requirement yet, Maastricht University will offer and cover a suitable language course.

Additionally:

  • You are flexible within the opening hours of our library locations – including evenings and weekends.
  • You have (or are willing to obtain) an Emergency Response Certificate (training will be provided).

What We Offer

As a Library Services Staff Member at the University Library, you will work for the most international university in the Netherlands, located in beautiful Maastricht. We offer:

  • Good employment conditions. The position is classified in scale 6–7, based on the UFO profile “Library Services Staff Member,” job level 1/2, depending on relevant work experience, with a salary between €2,872 and €3,809 gross per month (full-time, 38 hours/week), plus 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • A 12-month contract for 0.8 FTE, with the prospect of a permanent contract upon satisfactory performance.
  • Flexible working hours and the possibility to work from home part of the time (depending on your role), including monthly home office and internet allowances.
  • 29 vacation days and 4 additional holidays for full-time employees (Carnival Monday & Tuesday, Good Friday, Liberation Day), plus up to 12 additional days via compensatory time.
  • Customizable terms and conditions through the CAO options model.
  • Excellent secondary benefits, such as ABP pension, corporate fitness, and access to UM’s extensive sports facilities.
  • Plenty of opportunities for personal and professional development through training and initiatives such as “Recognition and Rewards.”
